Biševo Island and the Blue Grotto, Croatia.

I can’t say it enough, take a picture perfect boat trip from Split harbour and explore the dotted archipelagos and crystal blue expanse the Adriatic Sea has to offer, you won’t be disappointed!

Situated right in the middle of the Dalmatian archipelago is the charming Biševo Island, famous for its Blue Grotto which has become a serious tourist attraction, the rest of this quaint and striking destination is often sorely overlooked.

First continuously inhabited by an Abbey of Benedictine monks in the 11th century the island is still home to the humble stone Church of St Silvester and the ruins of the monastery, abandoned 200 years later due to the ever present danger of Adriatic pirates.

Only 2.2mi² and home to just 15 permanent residents the island is an inexplicably gorgeous getaway, the perfect place to lose yourself in the splendour of simplicity. The island is truly romantic, quiet and unassuming and generously sprinkled with stunning hidden coves where you can while away the hours waiting for your opportunity to experience the Blue Grotto whilst soaking in the sun on the beach and taking in the idyllic surroundings.

The Blue Grotto of Biševo Island has been known to local fisherman for centuries, a recess of pure wonder discovered by divers long since forgotten. The cave has only been accessible to the public since the late 19th century when a hole was blasted in the cave wall big enough (only just) to fit a boat through its gap and cash in on this majestic marvel. On a clear and calm day the sun’s rays beat down though an underwater opening onto the white sand which lines the floor of the cave some 30 foot down and reflects back up projecting an ethereal blue light into the interior of the cavern.

Although I was only able to experience the island for a short time it’s captured my affection and I can’t help but dream of one day escaping to its shores to spend my days looking out over the water, writing and enjoying an effortless diet of local produce; seafood, olive oil and wine all sourced just a stone’s throw away, perfection! Maybe one day…
